How about waking up to a Starck? This FM alarm clock radio with digital display can certainly wake you up in style. While not the only cool such gadget around, I love the oversized speaker and the mind that thinks about making the speaker the main focal point. The only issue I see is that of practicality. I would like to be able to see the time but since I would most certainly keep the speaker facing out, it would require picking up and rotating the piece to check out the time. If you, however, are the type who sets an alarm and is ready to go when it rings, you will be just fine.

No one really does step ladders. Okay, not entirely true but very few do it as well as Marcello Ziliani of the Milan based Studio Zetass. The ladder has aluminum frame with injection molded ABS steps. Obviously it slides open and is quite compact when closed. It is available in other colors; I for one really dig the greenish one. Just love it.

You have to go out and visit Wal-Mart from time to time. There are cool things to be had, if you are patient. Take this wine rack for example. Not only does it look cool, the design actually makes very good use of space. Stores 6 bottles of wine and is made of aluminum. Come to think of it, it would be an absolute knock-out in heavy stainless steel with that brushed look.

When you need a desk lamp, you really need one. This beautiful lamp is on sale at DWR. The Tolomeo lamps are well known and an award-winning Italian import designed by Michele De Lucchi and Giancarlo Fassina. The lamps feature a matte anodized aluminum diffuser that can swivel 360 degrees and the steel handle makes adjustments very easy. Thanks to DWR, can own this iconic piece of design for just a bit less (always helpful in these shaky economic times).

Yes its not for everyone, but cool stuff rarely is. This utterly modern (futuristic?) coffee table has bilevel back and clear glass panes so it basically creates a funky two level setup. The frame is stainless tell with rubber feet. We feel that its cool for the use of materials that work very well with the look and we do dig the entire two level pane design.

Living in a large city has its advantages but also its downsides. One of which is the lack of greenery that one has to put up with. So enter this frame which comes with everything to grow a lawn on the wall. The hidden tray holds the stuff that grows and after about a week of planting, the grass sprouts and brings a little of the outdoors to your bedroom. Check out the link for more details.

I love this cleverly designed multi-purpose tea light holder (especially the pouting mouth opening). There might be more like this but I have yet to see a holder of this kind serve as a snack plate. Sweden’s Sagaform, by the way, has amazing stuff for the kitchen.

There are a lot of coasters out there and many very cool ones too. These by Josh Jakus catch our fancy for being unusual. The design is inspired from a 6-pack. They are made of recycled rubber and after use go right back into the ring for storage. A quick fun way to add bit of color to the backyard BBQ.

I must admit that it is the most unusual planter that I have ever seen. Coolness it has in abundance. Made of white porcelain and is 11 x 11cm in size. Granted its only for small plants and herbs but you put this thing on the desk and people will strike up a conversation with you. So if you are feeling unsociable these days then forget it, otherwise you can grab it over the pond.

If you are finally getting around to spring cleaning, opening windows and painting the day room, and you want to add a bit of color without driving yourself nuts, a nice vintage movie poster is a great idea. The issue with vintage posters is cost since it could run into, well, a lot. Good quality reproductions, however, can be a good choice. This poster of a comedy movie by the famed French director Jacques Tati is lovely in the use of bright colors and the festive theme. The movie itself if somewhat of a landmark in the French movie industry. According to Wikipedia.com “… tells the story of an inept rural village postman who interrupts his duties to inspect the traveling fair that has come to town. Influenced by too much wine and a documentary on the rapidity of the American postal service, he goes to hilarious lengths to speed his mail deliveries aboard his bicycle. Tati filmed it in 1947 in the village where he found refuge from Nazi recruiters during the German occupation.”
This is a large poster; 27″ x 39″ so it will certainly have presence.
